Police say the suspects assaulted officers deployed to secure polling stations, with investigations indicating the violence was intended to disrupt the electoral process.

Police in the Wamala region have arrested five people from Kassanda District in connection with an attack on police officers who were on duty during the recent presidential and parliamentary elections.

The Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson, SSP Lameck Kigozi, said the suspects were arrested for allegedly engaging in violent conduct and assaulting officers tasked with maintaining law and order at polling stations.

SSP Kigozi said the officers were lawfully deployed to provide security and ensure a peaceful voting process when they came under attack.

“We arrested five individuals from Kassanda District who allegedly attacked police officers while they were performing their lawful duties during the election process,” SSP Kigozi said. “Such acts are criminal and will not be tolerated.”

He said preliminary investigations indicate that the violence was premeditated and aimed at disrupting the electoral process. The suspects are currently being held in police custody as investigations continue and are expected to be charged in court in accordance with the law.

SSP Kigozi emphasized that police have a constitutional mandate to safeguard elections and protect voters, electoral officials and election materials.

“Police officers are deployed to ensure that elections are conducted peacefully and safely. Anyone who attacks security personnel undermines democracy and will face the full force of the law,” he said.

He also warned members of the public against engaging in violence during electoral activities, urging political actors and their supporters to resolve disputes through lawful means.

Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining security throughout the electoral period and called on communities to cooperate with security agencies to ensure peaceful and credible elections.
